Background
Northfield Boulevard (County Road 47) between Dahomey Avenue (Minnesota Highway 3) and Hampton Boulevard (County Road 50) needs pavement resurfacing. Because of the history and current condition of the roadway between Cannon River Boulevard (County Road 94) and Hampton Boulevard, reclamation was chosen as the resurfacing method.
Reclamation projects are like mill and overlay projects except with an additional step. The remaining layers of existing pavement and gravel base are pulverized and recycled into new pavement. This provides for extended pavement life over traditional mill and overlay.
Each of the existing culverts and cattle passes along the corridor were inspected to assess their condition. Culverts in poor condition will be replaced with the project. Cattle passes no longer in use will be removed or replaced with drainage culverts.
Existing guardrail will be removed at two locations along the corridor. To accomplish this, the culverts at these locations will be extended, so the slopes from the edge of the roadway can be flattened.
