Dakota County Child and Teen Checkups (C&TC) work with families, community partners and health care providers to make sure youth are getting all their medical and dental checkups.
A Child and Teen Checkup is a full wellness checkup. It is available for any person who is under the age of 21 and eligible for Medical Assistance.
We can help you:
- Find a doctor.
- Find a dentist.
- Schedule an appointment.
- Connect families to transportation or interpreter services for your appointments.
- Connect families to community resources.

When are checkups due
Health check-ups
It is recommended that children have check-ups at the following ages.
- 2 weeks
- 2, 4 and 6 months
- 9, 12 and 15 months
- 18, 24 and 30 months
- Every year from age 3 through 20 years
Dental check-ups
It is recommended to have dental check-ups at the following ages.
- At first tooth or 12 months old.
- Then every 6 months (two times per year).
Why checkups are important
- Regular checkups help keep children, teens and young adults healthy.
- Parents and children can get information about healthy lifestyles.
- Teens and young adults can learn to take charge of their own health, with family support.
- Regular dental checkups increase comfort at an early age and promotes good habits.
- Health and dental problems can be found and treated early.
What happens at a checkup
- A complete physical exam.
- Hearing and vision checks.
- Lab tests and immunizations.
- Developmental, growth and mental health screenings.
- Fluoride varnish and referral to a dentist.
- Information about physical and mental health, healthy habits and nutrition.
- Time to talk with your health care provider to talk about your questions and concerns.
- Health checkups can be used to meet requirements for Head Start, school, sports or day care enrollment.
