Dakota County Safe Routes to School is an effort to improve walking and bicycling conditions for our youth and encourage more active lifestyles. Dakota County Public Health and local partners are working together to help schools and communities develop Safe Routes to School programs.
Why Safe Routes to School?
The percent of students who walk or bike to school dropped significantly over the past generation, from 48 percent in 1969 to just 13 percent in 2009. This has contributed to a reduction in physical activity among kids and increased health problems.
Kids who walk or bike to school:
- Arrive alert and able to focus on school.
- Are more likely to be a healthy body weight.
- Are less likely to suffer from depression and anxiety.
- Get some of the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity during the trip to and from school.
- Demonstrate improved test scores and better school performance.
