Dakota County Safe Routes to School is an effort to improve walking and bicycling conditions for our youth and encourage more active lifestyles. Dakota County Public Health and local partners are working together to help schools and communities develop Safe Routes to School programs.
The percent of students who walk or bike to school dropped significantly over the past generation, from 48 percent in 1969 to just 13 percent in 2009. This has contributed to a reduction in physical activity among kids and increased health problems.
